Thorlabs Canteen Refurbishment
Canteen Refurbishment Project – Ely, Cambridgeshire
Improving welfare facilities for staff is currently experiencing an increase in popularity, as companies recognise the value of improved morale and productivity with the provision of better facilities.
This canteen refurbishment was exactly that, providing a comfortable more modern environment for staff to sit and have their lunch or break in. This project was completed in just ten working days, start to finish, including all of the mechanical and electrical changes required to the existing area.
The curved feature flooring was one of the highlights of this build. Designing the seating area to be identified by the traditional, classic oak-effect vinyl plank floor with the walkways surrounding this in a red safety floor vinyl, was based on the contrasting colours of the client’s corporate identity.
Another important feature of this refurbishment project was the kitchen design and build. Spanning over eight metres in length, Acorn’s team designed the kitchen to suit the flexible needs of the client’s employees. Two integrated full height fridges were required along with dishwasher, custom built microwave units, new stainless steel sink, base units, wall units and a hydro boil tap unit to provide instant hot water, making sure that even at peak break times, hot drinks were in full flow.
Other units installed within the design included a custom recycling centre situated away from the immediate food preparation areas, ensuring that waste and recyclables are segregated and disposed of in line with current trends. We used the same base units from the kitchen to build these with our craftsmen seamlessly integrating these into the design. The seating was selected in five different bold colours, installed randomly across the six tables with matching bar stools at the breakfast bar. The whole area was repaired and made good as new, before being fully repainted.
A new training room was created at the end of the space, comprising a new partition wall utilising full height glazed modules. We were able to ensure the natural light flow through to the canteen, with the addition of venetian blinds between these windows allowing the vision to be shut if required when the training room was being used for privacy. New carpet tiles were laid in Acorn’s design, with a strobe pattern picking out the client’s corporate colours, and new seating and furniture suitable for a modern meeting and training room.
This refurbishment project not only enhanced the aesthetics of the area, but also the performance and efficient use of the space too.
